While there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to decorating your space, predetermined notions can lead to rookie mistakes that can be pricey and un-functional. Here’s a short list of tips to help you avoid the kinds of common design slip-ups that can dampen even the best-laid plans.

The 10 Decorating Mistakes Almost Everybody Makes

1. Size Matters

It’s important to know your room, doorway and stairwell dimensions before making any new furniture purchase. Furniture too large or small makes for an unbalanced room. Although you may think that you can just ‘eye’ it, you may end up making a pricey mistake. With exact measurements, you’ll be more focused in your search and less likely to purchase something that won’t really work.

2. Know your Budget

It can be tricky figuring out how much money to allocate to a new furniture purchase. First, find your style inspiration. Visit the “Get Inspired” section on mealeysfurniture.com for ideas, then, break the project down into its components –furniture, accessories, rugs, etc. Decide how much you’d like to spend and where you want to spend it. Choose quality over cost if you can, especially with items that aren't so easily replaced like the living room sofa and loveseat.

3. More Isn’t Always Better

It only takes a few special things to make a room unforgettable and wow-worthy. The old adage “Less is More” holds true in furniture as well as accessories, and simplicity fosters relaxation. Want to showcase your family portraits? Choose your favorites and consider using the same frame for each before hanging them in an organized method. Plus, any room can look more polished with a few vases, bowls, throw pillows, etc.

4. Skillfully Hang Your Art

There’s no real hard and fast rule about the height you should hang pictures, but there are guidelines that can be useful.

As a rule of thumb, the way to hang art is to have the halfway point at about eye level. If you’re hanging pictures above furniture, make sure to leave at least 4 inches of clearance. Don’t go too high, otherwise the eye will focus on the area between the art and the furniture, and you certainly don’t want that.

5. Not Enough Variety

Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Your furniture and accessories doesn’t need to be “matchy-matchy”. Lots of textures, patterns, and colors aide in the personality of each room. Rooms should reflect your personality!

6. Try It Before You Buy It

Some design rules are meant to be broken. And then there's color. It can feel like a major faux pas when a paint color you’ve chosen looks much different than it did on the swatch sample. With all of the color choices, even the best of us are bound to take an occasional wrong turn around the color wheel. It’s always best to test at least 2-3 colors before painting. Lighting and wall texture change with time of day, therefore changing the original color.

7. Hanging Curtains Too Low

The curtains and drapes you hang work hard for you; they let in or block light, create privacy and complement your decor. Hanging your curtains at ceiling level maximizes the light that shines through and it can make a room feel larger because the walls look taller. This works well in a small space!

8. Lighting The Way

Your home should offer as much natural lighting as possible. As seasons change, the light continues to change throughout the day. A common misconception is the need to light a whole room. Try instead to incorporate multiple points of light such as a combination of floor and table lamps to enhance the overall ambience.

9. Pushing Everything Against the Walls

Your living space isn't a game of Tetris, but if you’ve fallen prey to pushing all of your furniture against walls, it can make any room feel like dead space. Create a different conversation setting by bringing furniture closer together to create a more intimate vibe.

10. Get A Leg Up

First, 4×6 is never large enough for anchoring a seating area with a sofa. Legs on or off? Our best tip is be consistent. If your sofa legs are off, have the chair legs off the rug as well and vice versa.
