If you're thinking of doing a nautical themed room think of an old fisherman and his dog living in a dark knotty pine home. Don't laugh at that image! Honestly, this is one of the best bases for creating an authentic looking nautical style room.
First, begin with red, blue and touches of white accents as your color palette. Then select your fabrics. Look for stripes and prints that reflect the nautical feels. Leather is even a great choice for your nautical decor since it has a very masculine feel. The next step to creating the nautical theme is to choose your accents. Maps, compasses, lighthouses, boats, ship wheels, lanterns, old rustic bottles and lobster cages are all perfect accents and easy to find at any shore house garage sale.
Don't forget to incorporate rope in your nautical theme. It can be one of the best finds in creating that unique nautical look that you're trying to achieve. Take a stairway banister for instance. Using rope for the banister is a fun and creative way to bring interest. How about replacing your traditional napkin rings by using rope instead at the dining table or maybe trim out your table top or base with rope if you're feeling inspired. What better way to use rope in the living room than by wrapping rope around drapery rods or used as tie backs for curtains. Who would have thought something as simple as rope could have so many endless possibilities when decorating nautical. I bet even a fisherman would be highly impressed.
