When it comes to beach homes, one of my favorite styles is the bungalow or cottage styled house. It may be small but that just adds to the ambiance and history that lies within the walls of a true 1920's built shore home. However, the challenge may not only lie in finding a true cottage shore house still in existence, the true challenge may be in looking for smaller scaled furniture pieces and storage while decorating that will accommodate your needs.

First, remember when decorating a cottage style home that although it may look cute and cozy, it will only feel that way if you find cleaver ways to store your belongings and keep it looking clutter free. Since most cottage walls and floors were done in darker pine finishes it may make the rooms feel ever smaller. Lighting up the interior space is a great starting point by painting the walls white. The brightness of the white will open up the rooms. Soften dark wood floors by adding natural or light colored area rugs. Select fabrics that carry a very soft and open feel. Choose pastel colors (they work the best) and prints in soft floral patterns since they tend to show best against bright and white interiors while contributing to a very light and airy cottage feel.
Mermaids, seahorses, sand dollars, seagulls, mismatched furniture pieces and white or pastel colored wicker of your liking creates that fun, whimsical cottage feel. Maximize your space by using baskets to keep towels, shoes, books, and other shore necessities organized and out of sight to invited guests. As the saying goes "You never know just how many friends you have until you own a beach house." You can even maximize the sleeping spaces in bedrooms by purchasing bunk beds, under bed trundles, sleeper sofas or day beds to serve as sofas during the day and sleepers by night. Just make sure that they are bringing the dinner.
